Freebee Launches New Late-Night Ride Service at the University of Miami
In August 2024, Freebee officially launched its electric, on-demand ride service at the University of Miami, offering students a safe, convenient, and sustainable way to get around campus and nearby areas after dark.
The new late-night service operates Monday through Friday from 7 p.m. to 4 a.m., providing free rides in fully electric vehicles through the Ride Freebee app — now integrated directly into the UMiami mobile app. The program replaces the university’s former Safe Ride service, offering extended hours, real-time ride tracking, and a broader service area to better meet student needs.
“It allows me to save money on places close to school,” said UM freshman Alissa Spence in an interview with The Miami Hurricane.
Freebee’s late-night launch is a collaboration between UM’s Parking & Transportation department and Student Government, which advocated for a more modern and efficient solution to campus transportation during peak nighttime hours. The service helps address key concerns around student safety, especially since a majority of off-campus crimes tend to occur at night.
Early adoption has been strong: in just the first month, Freebee completed nearly 400 rides — already more than half the total completed by Safe Ride during the entire 2023 academic year.
Looking ahead, Freebee and the university are exploring options to expand service to weekends and adjust hours based on student demand and usage patterns.
